Undergraduate Program
Honors Program
In many departments, honors work counts only in addition to regular major courses. In the Spanish honors program, SPN 378H may count within the 27 hours required of the major when the topic corresponds with that of a required major course. Students should seek advice of the honors advisor and undergraduate advisor as early on in the major as possible to avoid duplication of courses. In cases where most required courses have already been taken and/or the topic of 378H does not correspond to a course required for the major, then the honors course(s) will count in addition to the 27 major hours. Honors theses and reports (SPN 379H) count in addition to the 27 major hours, as in other departments.
Majors who are candidates for special honors in Spanish and Portuguese should apply to the honors advisor for admission to the honors program by the end of their Junior year. A University grade point average of at least 3.0 is required for admission. The requirements for graduation with special honors are:
- two honors seminars, SPN 378H- (if admitted to UT under 2000-2002 catalog or earlier), OR
- an honors thesis (two semesters of SPN 379H), OR
- one honors seminar and an honors report (SPN 378H and SPN 379H if admitted to UT under 2002-2004 catalog or later)
