Alumna Awarded a NSF Fellowship

Alumna Isla Flores-Bayer, who studied Linguistics in our Department, has been awarded a Graduate Research Fellowships by the National Science Foundation (NSF).  Flores-Bayer received her BA in 2009 in Hispanic Linguistics from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and she also took courses in the Department of Linguistics at UT. She was a Dean’s Distinguished Graduate in 2009 and currently, she is enrolled in the doctoral program in Linguistics at Stanford University.

This NSF fellowship will allow her to carry out a project focused on building bridges between syntactic and semantic analyses and socio-cultural studies. As she explains, the goal is “to understand normal language attrition, variation and change with respect to heritage speakers and bilinguals in language contact situations.” Not only will this study build on her previous research experience, but also, she adds, “my desire to conduct this type of research developed as an undergraduate studying Spanish and Linguistics at UT Austin.” We look forward to seeing the results in the future.
