Jossianna Arroyo-Martinez will direct a faculty-led study abroad program in Salvador, Brazil during summer session I, 2012. A literary and cultural critic and expert in African Diaspora Studies in Brazil and the Caribbean, Prof. Arroyo will teach a course on Afro-Brazilian Literatures and Cultures at ACBEU, (Brazilian American Cultural Association), a prestigious language school and cultural center located in Vitória, in the center of Salvador Bahia, as part of our ongoing partnership program in language and culture in Salvador, Brazil and the University of Texas, Austin. Salvador, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with 500 years of history is one of the most beautiful cities of Brazil. The program will offer Portuguese language instruction and a community service learning experience in Salvador Bahia, a city where Afro-Brazilians struggles build tradition, cultural agency and social resistance.
