The National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society:
Sigma Delta Pi-zeta Chapter at UT

On November 13, 2011, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, Sigma Delta Pi - Zeta chapter was opened at he University of Texas at Austin. Professor Jill Robbins, Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese that hosts the association, conducted the event and presided the initiation ceremony of the 26 students who joined it. Several faculty members of the Department accompanied the students in this important event.
    
Sigma Delta Pi strives to embrace the diversity that exists within the community of Latino and/or Hispanic undergraduate and graduate students on campus.  

In order to better learn from our academic mentors, the Society will serve as a bridge between the students and faculty members. Its members are interested in create productive dialogues among students and professors. Communication is a key element to establish a creative and inspiring learning environment.  

The purposes of this society are:
1. To foster the excellence in the study of the Spanish language and in the study of literatures and cultures of the Spanish-speaking peoples.
2. To honor those who have broaden the knowledge of Hispanic/Latino cultures in the English-speaking world.
3. To encourage university students to acquire a greater interest in and a deeper understanding of Hispanic/Latino cultures.
4. To help its members to find better ways in the attainment of their goals as young scholars and citizens.
5. To transform our knowledge of Spanish into a tool to serve those in need in the community.
