Professor Zimic joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin as an Instructor of Spanish in 1962. The Department, joined by the Randy Diehl, the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, celebrated his 50 years at the university at a very well-attended event in Spring 2012.

An internationally-recognized scholar of Spanish Golden Age Literature, and in particular, the work of Miguel de Cervantes, he was the author of 9 published scholarly books (and hard at work on a 10th), as well as more than 60 articles published in important venues in the United States and Europe. Professor Zimic maintained a highly visible profile in the profession until the very end of his career.  He served on the editorial board for the Editorial Albatros since 2000, and he had been a corresponding member of the Spanish Royal Academy of letters since 1977. He served as a panel member for Romance Studies at the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2005, and he was the Chair of the Election Committee for the Academica Norteamericana de la Lengua Española.

Recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award in 1966 and 1988, and the Dean's Award for Undergraduate Teaching in 1988, Professor Zimic was an erudite and much-admired teacher and research supervisor for graduate and undergraduate students alike. He taught a broad range of courses for the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, as well as several Signature Courses and Freshman Seminars. In their evaluations of his courses, students commented enthusiastically about his passion for literature and his dedication to their learning.

Finally, Professor Zimic performed valuable outreach work to the community. He directed seminars on poetry for the Austin Independent School District in Spring 1993and 1994, and for the Texas Foreign Language Association in 2000.  He offered a seminar on teaching Don Quijote for teachers of Advanced Placement courses at Rice University in 2008.  And, as you all know he was an active participant each year in the Poetry Declamation Contest sponsored by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

The family will not hold a funeral or memorial service, and they have asked that , in lieu of flowers, mourners offer donation to the American Cancer Society or Austin Hospice's Christopher House.
