Associate Professor Janine Barchas wins Humanities Research Award

Wed, December 15, 2010

The Department of English congratulates Associate Professor Janine Barchas, who won a 2010 Humanities Research Award.

The College of Liberal Arts offers ten Humanities Research Awards each year to tenured and tenure-track faculty members whose work falls within the disciplines of the humanities. Each award provides recipients with $5,000 a year for three years, for a total of $15,000, to facilitate completion of a work in progress.

Professor Barchas plans to use the funds to finish her current project, a book entitled Matters of Fact in Jane Austen: History, Location, and Celebrity.

Dean Randy Dhiel established the awards to address the shortage of funding for humanities projects. Recipients are expected to produce one or more publications and to publicize their work throughout the academic community via conferences and other venues.

Professor Barchas is the second faculty member in the Department of English to receive the Humanities Research Award. Last year, Professor Marjorie Woods won for a project entitled, “Weeping for Dido: Male Writers and Female Emotions in the Late Medieval and Early Renaissance Classroom.”

Associate Professor Janine Barchas (Stanford B.A. and Chicago Ph.D.) joined the University of Texas at Austin in 2002, after teaching at the University of Auckland in New Zealand for five years. Barchas’ first book, Graphic Design, Print Culture, and the Eighteenth-Century Novel (Cambridge Univ. Press, 2003), won the SHARP book prize for best work in the field of book history. In addition to several editing projects, Barchas has published articles on writers from “the long eighteenth century” in journals such as ELH, Review of English Studies, Eighteenth-Century Life, Eighteenth-Century Fiction, Nineteenth-Century Literature, and Persuasions.
