Graduate student Katharine Beutner wins Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction

Thu, May 5, 2011

The Department of English congratulates graduate student Katharine Beutner, whose novel Alcestis (Soho Press, 2010) won the Publishing Triangle’s Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction.

Beutner’s novel reimagines the Greek myth of Alcestis, who sacrificed herself and went to Hades in her husband’s stead. Whereas most versions of the myth focus on Admetus, Alcestis’s husband, Beutner’s book concentrates on Alcestis’s point of view, allowing her more complex motivations and a detailed background.

The Publishing Triangle, the association of lesbians and gay men in publishing, offers awards to the best LGBT books annually. They announced this year’s winners at the 23rd annual Triangle Awards on April 28 at the New School.

Beutner will begin a Visiting Assistant Professor position at the College of Wooster next fall.
