Ti kniver i hjertet (Cross My Heart and Hope to Die), dir. Marius Holst (1994)

Norwegian drama/mystery, based on the novel Gutten som ville være en av gutta by Lars Saabye Christensen (1994). The year is 1967, the setting is the slums of east Oslo.  Everyone is singing the Swedish hit song "Lyckliga gatan" (Happy Street). Twelve-year-old Otto Olsen would like nothing better than to be picked for the soccer team  and hang out with his best friend Johnny all summer long, but both of these plans fall through.  Worse, Otto is asked again and again by the adults in his life to keep secrets -- hence the title of the film.  Whom can he trust?

A memorable and surprising coming-of-age film, reminiscent of Stand By Me.
