What happens when you combine army reform with moral philosophy, natural law theories, and socially egalitarian ideologies of the Parisian salon milieu? Military Enlightenment! This talk explores a little known egalitarian movement in literature and military thought of the mid-eighteenth century that aimed to democratize heroism and its rewards to all men of the French army. A study based upon archival documents, this talk reveals the French army to have been one of the most liberal-thinking institutions of the Bourbon absolute monarchy at the twilight of the Old Regime.
