"Medium and Addressivity in French Online Exchange"

Participants in online telecollaborative exchanges often have the illusion of sharing a common communicative space, even though in reality they are responding to one another’s utterances from quite different contexts. This qualitative study uses Bakhtin's notion of addressivity as a lens through which to investigate the hypothesis that different mediums of communication (forum, email, chat, videoconferencing), by virtue of their different affordances, lead to different kinds of gaps in interlocutors’ understanding and consequently give rise to different compensatory responses. Based on analysis of recorded online exchanges, participant journals, and questionnaire responses collected from French and American students, findings suggest that the medium does matter in how communication is enacted and how participants form impressions of one other.
