4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Dr. Abigail Barnes will present a talk entitled "Detaining Women to Win the War: The Forgotten Campaign to Create Clean Soldiers that Ended up Transforming American Cities."

This research is based on wartime documents from the National Archives.  She will describe events that occurred during the First World War when women and men suspected of carrying venereal disease were incarcerated in indefinite detention as part of a joint program by the US War Department and Public Health Service.

This little-known campaign ushered in Prohibition and led to the shuttering of red-light districts across the country.
