Jan Musekamp - European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder)

Thu, April 28, 2011 | Burdine Hall 337

5:00 PM - 7:30 PM

In 1945, the harbor city of Szczecin, just 95 miles northeast of Berlin, was taken over by Poland. With the remaining Germans expelled, a new Polish population poured into the city. The lecture presents the new inhabitants’ strategies to make Szczecin their home: How did they deal with cultural artifacts left by the Germans? What historical nar-ratives were invented to prove the historical rights of Poland to the city? Was there some interaction between the former German and the new Polish inhabitants? How did the Szczecinians’ identity change after 1989?
