Associate Proffessor Kit Belgum will be presenting a paper entitles, "Bringing Germany to America: Travel Writing and Cultural Transfer."

This paper examines an early 19th century American work, Henry Dwight's Travels in the North of Germany 1825-1826, to explain the attraction (and limits) of Germany as a cultural and intellectual model for the United States. In the process it will explore the ways in which travel writing (in the post-Grand Tour era) moved from an interest in individual erudition to an project of cultural transfer.
