An adaptation of a classic Wilhelm Hauff fairy tale, Paul Verhoeven’s Das kalte Herz (Heart of Stone) follows the decisions of the poor woodsman Peter Munk. Ridiculed by the townspeople and wishing to marry the beautiful Lisbeth, Peter appears to have prosperity in his grasp when he finds a good forest spirit who grants his wish for wealth. When this scheme fails and Peter is once more penniless, he seeks out the giant Holländer-Michel, who restores his newfound prosperity in exchange for his heart, which the spirit replaces with one made of stone. Peter agrees and becomes a ruthlessly successful businessman – but at the cost of his happiness.
