Siegfried Hartmann’s Das Feuerzeug (The Tinder Box) is an adaptation of a classic Hans-Christian Andersen fairy tale. A young soldier becomes fabulously rich when he steals three chests of copper, silver and gold and a magical tinder-box from an old witch. As his money runs out and he is forced to the brink of poverty, the soldier unwittingly discovers the tinder-box’s power – it can summon three enormous dogs – each of which bring more copper, silver, and gold when called on. Only these can save him from the king’s wrath after he is caught peeping in on the beautiful princess…
