Gottfried Kolditz’ DEFA adaptation of the classic Grimm fairy tale is, after Disney’s 1937 animated film, the second most popular rendition of the Snow White story in Germany to date, with over 7.5 million viewers in 1961 alone. The story is a familiar one: hated by her jealous and bloodthirsty stepmother, Snow White flees a murder attempt and seeks shelter in the woods with seven kindly dwarfs. Feeling she is safe from harm, Snow White welcomes the disguised queen
into her home...with fatal consequences.
