Daron Shaw Named Distinguished Teaching Professor

Tue, April 20, 2010

Daron Shaw, Government professor, has been selected to the Academy of Distinguished Teachers, one of this year’s seven new members.

Professor Shaw is in his 17th year of teaching at the University. Shaw combines rich intellectual content with research and real life experiences. His campaigns and elections course, for example, requires students to join together into campaign teams and develop a 10-minute, multi-media presentation outlining a campaign plan. Each member of the team writes a research paper on one particular area of the campaign, and a panel of academic and professional experts cross-examines the students and grades their performances.

A nationally recognized expert on political campaigns and elections, Shaw’s other teaching includes courses on American and Texas government, applied survey research analysis, political behavior, political parties, and public opinion and voting behavior. At the graduate level, Shaw will soon have chaired 13 dissertation committees, and last year he received the University Coop Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award. In 2008, he received a President’s Associates Teaching Excellence Award.
