The Chinese Worker After Socialism

Mon, June 8, 2009

William Hurst’s book, The Chinese Worker After Socialism has been published by Cambridge University Press. Based on field research in nine cities across China, this study considers the fate of more than 35 million workers laid off from the state-owned sector. The book explains why these lay-offs occurred, how workers are coping with unemployment, what actions the state is taking to provide them with livelihoods and re-employment, and what happens when workers mobilize collectively to pursue redress of their substantial grievances. Through his comparative analysis of Chinese regions, Hurst also seeks to push research on Chinese politics in new directions and toward a greater emphasis on subnational comparison.
