The Invisible Hand of Peace

Fri, March 13, 2009

Patrick McDonald’s The Invisible Hand of Peace: Capitalism, The War Machine, and International Relations Theory has been released by Cambridge University Press. McDonald challenges the prominence of democracy and foreign trade dependence in scholarly and popular literatures on the causes of war and American foreign policy. Rather, he examines how internal economic institutions, like competitive market structures and private property, affect the distribution of political power within states and shape decisions for war. The more that private ownership reigns supreme and markets, not governments, determine the winners and losers of international trade, the less likely military conflict becomes. In short: Capitalism promotes peace.
