Walter Dean Burnham Honored by the American Political Science Association

Walter Dean Burnham is the Frank C. Erwin, Jr. Centennial Chair Emeritus in State Government. He is best known for his path-breaking studies of American election cycles. His 1971 book, Critical Elections and the Mainsprings of American Politics, opened up a new branch of political analysis. Burnham joined the UT Department of Government in 1988 and retired in 2004.

The Walter Dean Burnham Award is given for the best dissertation in the field of Politics and History. The committee is currently accepting nominations for outstanding dissertations from Ph.D.s awarded in either 2007 or 2008.
