Professional Development Opportunity for Texas K-12 Teachers

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS), University of Texas at Austin, will provide up to $750 each for two K-12 teachers to participate in Latin America-related summer teacher institutes/courses offered nationally.

Through a national Latin American Studies Teacher Training Network, several National Resource Centers, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, are collaborating to give educators access to the quality summer teacher institutes offered throughout the country.

Expenses covered: LLILAS will provide up to $750 toward professional development expenses. Expenses might include round trip airfare, lodging, institute/course fees. Funds must be expended by August 17, 2008.

In what ways are governments and other powerful institutions responsible to act toward individuals and toward each other “in a spirit of brotherhood”? How do we define human rights, in the most expansive sense of the term? And how are rights and resources being claimed and fought for around the world?

Hemispheres Summer Teachers’ Institute 2008 will explore the international context for the rights-related challenges we face today. We will look at specific cases that illustrate how people conceive of and struggle for crucial rights in civil, political, cultural, and economic realms.
