15 Minute History Tops the Charts!

Hemispheres has a long history of innovation, which reached new levels on Thursday, October 31 when our podcast program 15 Minute History has managed to climb into the #1 slot on iTunes U. The little podcast series we started a year ago has become the single most popular collection of recording from any of the hundreds of universities around the world that contribute materials to iTunes U!

Over the past 18 months, Hemispheres has been hearing from you, our core audience of educator professionals, with questions and concerns about the new State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) exam in World History. We've expanded our training, introduced new resources, and offered practical tips for teaching. This summer we're launching our most ambitious and in-depth initiative yet. This year's Summer Teachers' Institute will focus extensively on the World History TEKS, with the intent of helping you gain the background knowledge you need to prepare your students for the rigors of the STAAR exam.

From the remarkable mosques and architecture of Tashkent to the ancient capital of Khiva, follow the legendary Silk Road through the exotic best of Uzbekistan. Indulge in steamy marble hammams, roam the twisting lanes of ancient bazaars and explore the monuments and minarets of Samarkand. This 12-day adventure is a great introduction to this incredible country. GEEO and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at Austin are collaborating on this program. You will be accompanied by an experienced Uzbek tour leader arranged by GEEO, and an academic escort from the University of Texas. Together they will help provide background, context, and narration throughout the journey, and help you think of ways to use the experiences in your teaching and your classroom.
