Vincent Brown visits the IHS

Dr. Vincent Brown, Professor of History and African American Studies at Harvard University, will be visiting The University of Texas at Austin on Nov. 2-3.  Dr. Brown teaches courses in Atlantic history, African diaspora studies, and the history of slavery.  We are very pleased to welcome this accomplished scholar as he discusses three different projects: a workshop paper, a film, and his recent book. 

On Monday, Nov. 2, Dr. Brown will workshop his paper, "Social Death and Political Life in the Study of Slavery," at a lunch sponsored by the Institute for Historical Studies.  This lunch will be held on the fourth floor of Garrison Hall from 12:00 to 1:30.  Responding will be Dr. James Sidbury, Professor of History at UT Austin and author of Ploughshares into Swords: Race, Rebellion, and Identity in Gabriel's Virginia, 1730-1810 (Cambridge 2008) and Becoming African in America Race and Nation in the Early Black Atlantic (Oxford 2007). Dr. Sidbury teaches social and cultural history of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century America and early African American history.  To reserve your lunch and receive a copy of the pre-circulated paper, please email Courtney at by 9 a.m., this Friday, October 30.

That same evening, at 6:30 PM, Dr. Brown will be leading a screening of "Herskovits at the Heart of Blackness," a recent film that he co-produced.  The screening will be held at Garrison 0.102, and is free to the public.  Dr. Brown will lead a discussion following the film.  For more information on this movie, see:

Last, but certainly not least, Dr. Brown will be discussing his recent book,The Reaper's Garden: Death and Power in the World of Atlantic Slavery, on Tuesday, November 3, at 12:30.  The discussion will take place in GAR 4.100.  Please RSVP to Courtney at by 9 a.m., this Friday, October 30, if you wish to attend.
