The University History Society (UHS) presents the first of this semester's student speakers: Pranav Merchant. The title of his talk is "Economic Effects of the Spanish Conquest of the Philippines and Mercantile Theory".

Historians have established a certain set of broad features associated with mercantilism, especially the economic aspects of it. Such general characteristics, however, are based on the more well-known colonial enterprises that Europeans pursued, namely in the "New World." Do these characteristics apply to colonies not in the "New World"? Examining the economic effects of the Spanish Philippines provides a test for general theories of mercantilism.
