Earlier this month, the History Deapartment honored Ph.D. students who have received prizes, fellowships, and grants this year. The annual event recognizes the scholarly achievements of History gradaute students in the program.

Ph.D student Chloe Ireton collected by far the greatest number of accolades at this year’s History Department. In addition to the Department’s Perry Prize for best Master’s thesis/report, Chloe won four outside fellowships this year, among them the prestigious Leverhulme Trust Study Abroad Studentship and the Social Sciences Research Council (SSRC) Dissertation Fellowship. She also received three fellowships from various departments or programs at UT. Chloe’s dissertation explores the connections between black communities in three key port cities in the Iberian Atlantic in connection with the emergence of black Atlantic Catholic cultures, and this collection of fellowships will enable her to spend the next two years visiting archives in Spain, Mexico, and Colombia.

The department also honored three 2014 Mellon/ACLS (American Council of Learned Societies) Dissertation Completion Fellows: Benjamin Breen, Isabel Huacuja Alonso, and Brian Stauffer. (read the story at this link). More information about the students and their projects can be found on the ACLS website.

Another eminent fellowship, the Charlotte W. Newcombe Dissertation Fellowship, which supports outstanding work in religion and ethics, was awarded to Susan Zakaib. Susan’s dissertation examines the relationships between native languages and the Catholic Church in late colonial Mexico.

Other notable awards include two Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Doctoral Fellowships. First-year student, Sandy Chang, received a four-year fellowship to support her project on the history of prostitution and sex trafficking in the British Empire, and second-year student, Simon Miles, a three-year fellowship for his work on US-Soviet relations during the 1982-1985 period.

Edward Shore received the Ruth Landes Memorial Fellowship from the Reed Foundation in recognition of his work on the emergence of race based public policy and affirmative action in Brazil.

Finally, two advanced students garnered esteemed University of Virginia fellowships. Ava Purkiss was awarded a Carter G. Woodson Institute Two-year Pre-doctoral Fellowship. Her project examines the barriers to exercise for African American women and how they circumvented those barriers and sought health, fitness, beauty, and recreation through physical culture. Joseph Parrott received a one-year Miller Center National Fellowship. His dissertation charts the growth of European and North American solidarity with anti-colonial parties in Portuguese Africa and the impact this transnational network had on Western foreign policy and popular perceptions of the Cold War.
