Dr. Gretchen Murphy

Dr. Murphy will explore Alcott's book Hospital Sketches and short fiction about the Civil War. Serving as a nurse in the Civil War provided Alcott with material important both for her struggle to re-imagine women's public roles and to develop her literary voice. This lecture will explore what these Civil War writings tell us about Alcott's personal battles with her era's understandings of race, gender, and citizenship. Audiences will be invited to read Hospital Sketches in advance of the discussion.

Louisa May Alcott programs in libraries are sponsored by the American Library Association Public Programs Office with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
