The UT Global Initiative for Education and Leadership (UTGI) sent an educational outreach delegation to Guatemala in July 2012. “We discussed a series of possibilities that were well received,” Senior Associate Dean Richard Flores says, “and we look forward to developing partnerships in Guatemala.”
The group met with the Minister of Education and presidents of private and public universities near Guatemala City. During these meetings, they assessed needs, made recommendations for academic development, and discussed future opportunities to collaborate.
Representatives also consulted with the Universidad Centroamericana del Conocimiento Aplicado (UCEN), a new university set to open in 2015, on best practices for faculty training, ESL, and university administrative systems. Designed by a multidisciplinary team of Guatemalan and international academics in response to the socioeconomic conditions and the state of the education system, UCEN will employ student-centered techniques.
