Fellowship Procedures

Resident fellows

We invite applications for senior, mid-career, and postdoctoral fellows.
We will aim to provide fellowship funding that matches salaries from regularly-held appointments.

Eligibility

The Institute will offer research fellowships for the academic year 2008-2009.  Fellowships are not restricted to historians, but projects must have significant historical content.  We seek fellows in three different categories:

  1. One Senior Fellowship for applicants who are tenured full professors with international reputations and a substantial publishing record.
  2. One Fellowship for applicants at the mid-career level, whether tenured associates or senior assistant professors, who have commensurate publishing records.
  3. Two Post-Doctoral Fellowships for applicants who have completed and defended their dissertations no more than four years before the date of their application. Postdoctoral fellows must have their PhD in hand no later than 30 June, 2008.

Expectations for Fellows

Fellows must be resident in Austin during the term of their appointment and are expected to participate actively and regularly in the Institute's programming. Each fellow will present a pre-circulated paper at the Institute’s workshops.  Each senior and mid-career fellow will also give a public lecture.

Applications

Applications should be sent as electronic attachments to Julie Hardwick at historyinstitute@austin.utexas.edu by Feb. 15, 2008.

Each application should include:

  1. A comprehensive CV (including current salary).
  2. A description in no more than three pages, single-spaced of the applicant's proposed research project, its relevance to the theme, and specific goals for the period of residence in Austin.

Additionally, two letters of reference should be sent directly to the Director. Please note that a confirmation will be emailed to you when all materials are received and your application is complete.
