How are the workshops organized? Where and how often do the workshops take place?

Workshops occur approximately 2 to 3 times per month, usually on Mondays at 12noon to 1:30 pm, in Garrison Hall. Typically, the format will be discussion of a pre-circulated short paper of about 15-20 pages (see the call for papers guidelines). Lunch is provided with rsvp to Courtney Meador (meadorcl@mail.utexas.edu) at least 48 hours in advance.

Does the Institute provide any financial support for the workshop/presentations?

The Institute covers travel, lodging, meals, and some miscellaneous expenses of the paper presenter, including international guests.

I can't attend the workshop, but may I receive a copy of the paper?

On behalf of the presenters, the institute asks that paper requesters unable to attend the workshops contact the presenters directly. We ask this in the hope that it will allow the authors to have more control over how and to whom papers are disseminated.

Can applications be submitted for future years (ie, the year after the one being considered)?

Unfortunately, only applications for the year ahead will be considered. (See Fellowships page for applicable year deadlines.)

Are UT PhD graduate students eligible to apply for junior fellowships?

We do not currently provide post-doc support for UT students, but we are hoping to establish this support in the future.

Is "PhD in hand" required at the time of application, or does it just need to be in hand before the fellowship begins?

Applicants for the junior fellowships must have PhDs in hand by the end of June preceding the year of the fellowship.  (See Fellowships page for applicable year deadlines.)

Do you consider applications from PhDs without publications?

Yes.

Do you consider international applications? Are expenses covered for international guests?

Yes to both.

Are scholars who are not historians eligible to apply?

Yes, we welcome proposals from scholars of all disciplines as long as the project has a genuine, significant  historical orientation.

Can the institute arrange for library borrowing privileges?

Yes, the Institute will provide library cards for fellows and invited research scholars.

Is there any possibility of getting a study in the Perry-Casteneda Library?

Reservations for study rooms must be arranged directly with the Library. Please note that there is high demand for these studies.

What is the salary for the institute's junior fellowships, along with any other research stipends, etc.?

We will match salaries for fellows with jobs. For those who do not hold or have not held a prior appointment, we will offer a junior salary at the regular rate here which is $35-40,000, depending on qualifications besides PhD in hand.

What is the teaching load, if any, for fellows?

There are no teaching responsibilities at the institute.

Is there a formal departmental affiliation?

Yes, the Institute is housed in and run by the Department of History at UT-Austin.

What are application guidelines?

Please refer to the Fellowships page of our web site.

Can application materials be sent electronically (project proposal, CV, and letters of rec?)

Yes, we prefer to receive materials by email at historyinstitute@austin.utexas.edu
