Workshop: "Stop talking: Indigenous Pedagogies for a Sustainable Future"

Wed, May 28, 2014 • 12:30 PM - 4:30 PM • College of Liberal Arts Dean's Conference Room, Gebauer 3.312

A limited number of seats are available for lunch and a workshop with Ilarion (Larry) Merculieff and Libby Roderick following their public presentation of "Stop Talking: Ancient Pedagogies for a Sustainable Future." The session introduces participants to a faculty development program based on Alaska Native concepts presented in the public address: teaching and learning through reflection, silence, visual learning, storytelling, honoring relationships, and Elder-and earth-based learning. Through a series of exercises based on indigenous approaches, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their current teaching practices and the possibilities for broadening them to include these approaches. Together we will explore how pedagogies from indigenous cultures can enliven our teaching practices and help prepare students for the daunting challenges of the 21st century.

To reserve a space for lunch and the workshop, or for more information, please email HI program coordinator Melissa Biggs.

Workshop participants will receive a copy the book Stop Talking: Indigenous Ways of Teaching and Learning and Difficult Dialogues in Higher Education.
