Our research objective is to explore the psychological mechanisms underlying such clinical outcomes as alcohol use disorders, anxiety disorders, depression, and PTSD. Experiments conducted in our lab and other labs show that studying the person in the appropriate environment (person-environment interaction) is one of the crucial keys to understanding mechanism and outcome. We use techniques from human neuroendocrinology, molecular genetics, and social psychology. Our most recent finding shows that predeployment levels of testosterone and cortisol interact with war zone stress to predict symptoms of anxiety disorder in soldiers deployed in Iraq.
