About LLILAS
About the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies...
Please accept my hearty welcome to the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) at the University of Texas at Austin, a multidisciplinary institute under the umbrella of the College of Liberal Arts. Founded in 1940, LLILAS is a language and national resource center under Title VI of the Higher Education Act, integrating more than 30 academic departments at UT and offering programs that lead to the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees.
As you look around this website, please check out our degree programs, our Outreach page, our Publications page, and the LLILAS Calendar. To gain a really good idea of what we are about, you should also look at the Web pages of the Brazil Center and the Mexican Center, and our recently created centers for Latin American Social Policy (CLASPO) and Indigenous Languages of Latin America (CILLA). You should also check out the Benson Latin American Collection, a world-renown library and the crown jewel of Latin American Studies at UT-Austin. Perhaps then you will see why LLILAS ranks among the world's leading Latin American Studies centers.
As you look at the education program, please note that, in addition to degrees in Latin American Studies, we also offer joint degree programs with Business, Communications, Community and Regional Planning, Law, and the LBJ School of Public Affairs. These programs provide our students the opportunity to balance a broadly based knowledge of Latin America with a choice of concentrations in virtually any traditional discipline. LLILAS faculty come from departments throughout the university and include some of the most highly regarded Latin Americanists anywhere.
You will also want to look at the financial support available to LLILAS graduate students as well as opportunities for study and research abroad. Potential visiting scholars who wish to work in UT libraries or consult with UT faculty should click on our Research Fellows and Visiting Scholars programs. And if you so choose, you can even apply for admission here on the Internet.
Finally, do not leave our website without visiting the homepage of LANIC, the world's premier electronic gateway to Latin America, which LLILAS created and maintains. Here you will find links to nearly 12,000 Websites on Latin America. LANIC receives 4-5 million hits per month. Log on and see why.
And if you can't find what you need here, feel free to call us at 512.471.5551.
Happy hunting and best wishes,
Bryan Roberts, Director
C.B. Smith Sr. Centennial Chair in U.S.-Mexico Relations
