LAS 327 • MEXICAN PHOTOGRAPHY

Course Description

This course examines Mexican photography from the 19th century on to contemporary photographers and their work. Theoretical issues pertaining to the histories of photography, with emphasis on photography as an art form, documentary photography, photojournalism and photo manipulation are part of this course. Key Mexican films such as "Marëa Candelaria" from 1943, and "Canoa" (c. 1972) and others are going to be discussed within the Mexican socio-cultural and political context of the time, but more importantly, they will be investigated in their relationship to the history of Mexican photography. The role of still and moving images in the formation of Mexican National narratives will be addressed.

Photographers such as Casasola, Romualdo Garcia, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Nacho Lopez, Lola Alvarez Bravo, Tina Modotti, Lourdes Grobet, Graciela Iturbide and others will be discussed.

Grading Policy

Attendance: 22% of final grade Reading assignments and reports: 80% of final grade
