Course Description

LAS 337M is an introduction of the politics of Latin America. It begins with a brief overview of Latin American history and moves on to some of the regions's current social, economic and political characteristics. It then discusses four basic models of Latin American politics - democracy, populism, authoritarianism and revolution - and examines and compares cases of each of these. It concludes with a overview of US-Latin American relations.

No knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese is required or expected.

Grading Policy

Two mid-term exams and a final; each counts about a third.
