Course Description

Graduate Standing Required This course offers an opening into a huge topic - urbanization in Latin America - and a correspondingly huge literature. The course makes no pretence at covering all aspects of the topic, but instead selects several key areas for investigation. The focus of the course is not only to acquire substantive knowledge on the topic but also to pay considerable attention to how such research is done, and therefore we shall do a fair amount of analyzing how various scholars have approached their topics. The course includes readings on urban theory, urban social structures on the macro level, rural-urban migration and its manifestations (squatter settlements), urban informality, urban governance, urban electoral politics and political behavior, and the like.
