Course Description

The central theme around which this course is organized, the politics of modernization, belongs as much to the field of comparative politics as it does to interdisciplinary studies of the Latin American region. Six South American countries -- Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela -- constitute the core cases selected for in-depth analysis. The objective in comparing and contrasting them is to determine how they have handled developmental issues and responded to the pressures of democratization. Before beginning in-depth analysis, these countries will be placed within their wider Latin American setting and considered from a perspective designed to transcend the Latin American region.
