Course Description
This seminar will focus on the social and political history of the five nations of Central America in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It will explore in detail some of the following issues: state attitudes toward the "problema indio"; the development of active and passive protest movements; the social implications of revolution and counterrevolution; and the structural impact of foreign investment and intervention. it will be also examine the history of social institutions such as Church, the family, and "folk" communities.
