Course Description
Description: This course will be taught by David Warner from UT Austin and Nuria Homedes, MD, at the El Paso campus. It will be a real time distance learning class, and will be taught in the LBJ School Media Room and in El Paso. The course will focus on issues regarding health status on the US Mexico border including environmental health initiatives, public health initiatives including approaches to TB control, access to health services, and coordination and financing issues. There will be guest lecturers as well as lectures by the primary faculty members all of whom have conducted extensive research projects in Mexico and the US Mexico border with regard to health. The Development of a US Mexico Border Health Commission, cross border criteria for cross border practice (cross border health insurance), and NAFTA are only some of the issues, which will be discussed. As the US and Mexico integrate further economically and demographically it will be extremely important that they improve the integration of their health systems and nowhere is that more important than at the border.
