Course Description
DESCRIPTION: This course will be an exploration of Brazilian culture as represented in its music, film and television. The course will discuss the history of Brazilian media and popular culture, the differences between regions in Brazil, theoretical perspectives, and examples of major media genres. Particular attention will be given to the structure of media, issues of ethnic representation and participation in popular culture, the interplay between popular cultures and politics, the evolution of popular culture genres, the impact of global cultures, and the interplay between popular culture and its audience. There will be weekly screenings of film and/or video/television, plus considerable use of in-class examples of music and TV, as well as film clips.
