Course Description
This graduate readings course examines the historiography of people of African descent in Latin America and the Caribbean from the era of the Atlantic Slave Trade to the present. Topics explored include: The Atlantic Slave Trade and slavery, the literature on African-derived cultures in the Americas, the Haitian Revolution and its impact on articulations of race and nation in the region, debates on racial democracy, the comparative race relations scholarship, and more recent attempts to write histories of racialization from transnational and diaspora perspectives.
