Course Description
One of the most persistent ways of approaching a particular movement or period in literary studies consists in analyzing the ways writers have dealt with the question of form vs. ideology. This course proposes to examine two moments in Brazilian literary historythe 1930s and 1960swhen writers are especially prone to infuse their works with ethical and political messages. While analyzing the fiction and criticism from these two periods, we shall take into account the contexts (social, political, cultural) of production and circulation of both literary and critical discourses. Some topics of discussion will include: literature and politics in Brazil; the Brazilian literature of redemption; regionalism in the 1930s (the fiction of the sertão); literature under military dictatorship (censorship, exile, political memoirs, militant writings); and the impact of Theology of Liberation on Brazilian narrative. Finally, this course also proposes to analyze the emergence of the so-called new politically-engaged art from the 1990s onward, as well as a number of recent images of social exclusion in contemporary Brazilian literature.
