LAS 322 • 6-RECENT BRAZIL, 1919-PRESENT

Course Description

Lectures cover politics in Brazil, 1919-2004, with attention also to economic matters. The story opens with the uprisings of the 1920s and 1930, and then turns to the regimes of Vargas (who committed suicide in office), Kubitschek (builder of Brasília), Quadros (who resigned in 1961, and Goulart (overthrown in 1964). An examination of the ensuing military regime is followed by consideration of the more recent civilian administrations – those of Sarney, Collor (impeached in 1993), Itamar Franco and Fernando Henrique Cardoso – and the 2002 elections, plus the initial period of Lula’s administration.
