Course Description
¡°Latino¡± is a label just recently adopted by diverse groups of Latin American origin living in this country. This new ¡°naming¡± or label tries to convey the shifting dynamics of contemporary immigration into the United States. The term also creates new issues that are important in reference to different cultural processes, including the visual arts. This course will address some of the questions that this new category creates in the context of the visual arts. How Latino artists are contributing to this conversation? What are the politics and poetics of self-representation? What is it in a name, -labeling and history. The problems of displacement and mestizaje, are among some of the concepts these artists are interested in. How the selected artists for this course, convey these concerns is the main interest of in this course.
