LAS 366 • 8-MEXICAN REVOLUTION, 1910-1920

Course Description

Students in this course will examine Mexico's late nineteenth century economic growth, the social revolution of the 1910s, the political consolidation of the 1920s and 1930s, and the revolution's legacy for Mexicans today. We will explore two related questions. Did Mexico have a revolution? If so, what kind? Lectures, discussions, and videos. Discussions focus on the major historical theories of revolution, especially the recent work of sociologist Theda Skocpol and on the separate cases of social revolution, populism, and counter-revolution.
