Course Description
This course is a survey of Latin American literary authors from Modernism (1880) to contemporary authors (1990). The course starts with an analysis of discourses of nation building in Nineteenth century Latin America, to focus then on the Avant Garde, and the work of contemporary authors. One of the purposes of this course is to teach students to think critically on issues related to history, literatures and cultures in Latin America. Some of the themes that will be covered in the course are: national discourses and imaginaries, intersectionality of history and the socio-political in Latin American literature and politics of identity (race, ethnicity gender and sexuality).
