LAS 381 • PROSMNR: LAT AMER IN 20TH CEN

Course Description

This course is recommended for incoming LAS Masters students who want to get a feeling for the breadth of Latin American Studies as an interdisciplinary program. The central focus of the course is Latin America in the 20th century, a broad topic that will allow us to investigate specific themes from the perspectives of the various disciplines that make up Latin American Studies. Students will have the opportunity to develop their skills in critical reading and primary research. We will also explore the human and research resources available on the UT campus.

Course structure: The course is made up of three components, which include 1) in-class presentations on readings based on thematic topics 2) methodology workshops presented by faculty, who will offer an overview of the way their disciplines methodologies approach a given topic and 3) research modules, in which the class will visit research facilities on campus to learn how to access material related to Latin America.

Grading Policy

1/3 of the final grade is based on class presentations and small outside assignments 2/3 of the final grade is based on the successful completion of a research prospectus, due at the end of the semester.

Texts

A reading list will be provided on the first day of class, but students are not required to purchase any books. There will , however, be readings assigned prior to the guest lectures.
