Using a wide array of pictoral and alphabetic writings, Dr. Sousa examines Nahua, Mixtec, and Zapotec attitudes toward marriage and adultery within the broader framework of the colonial dialogue on morality and sexuality. The presentation considers the impact of Christianity, Spanish gender ideology, and colonial legal practice on native sexual concepts and social attitudes.
