"Saved by the Peineta or Not: Petra Santa Cruz de Stevens and the Polictics of Gender, Sexuality, and Race"

CMAS Research Fellow Dr. Nicole Guidotti-Hernandez will examine how the coming of the railroad to Tucson, Arizona in 1880 dramatically shifted the economy to the point of causing an economic depression.  In particular, it affected the life of one Tucsonense Mexican-Indigenous pioneer Petra Santa Cruz de Stevens, resulting in her husband's botched double suicide that changed her position in the community forever as a racialized, classed, and gendered subject.
