Thu, February 9, 2012 • 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM • BEN 2.104

Laura León-Llerena received her PhD from Princeton University (2011) and is currently a Lecturer of Colonial Latin American Studies at Birkbeck, University of London. She researches sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in colonial Latin America, with particular emphasis on the Andean region. Her book in progress, Historia, lenguaje y narración en el Manuscrito de Huarochirí presents an in-depth study of an anonymous native Andean text written in the Quechua language at the end of the sixteeth century or early seventeenth century in Peru. Her work shows how in the Huarochirí Manuscript language and narrative expose the possibilities and limits of the written word and how the colonization of Quechua language was crucial on the redefinition of social and cultural identities in early colonial contexts.
