Lecture: "The IDIEZ Project: A Model for Indigenous Language Revitalization in Higher Education"

Thu, February 7, 2013 • 4:00 PM • BEN 2.104

John Sullivan, Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas, will discuss indigenous language revitalization in higher education, particularly related to his work as Director of the Zacatecas Institute for Teaching and Research in Ethnology (IDIEZ), a Mexican nonprofit research institute. IDIEZ provides scholarships to indigenous college students who are native speakers of Nahuatl, trains them to work as teaching and research assistants, and involves them with Western scholars in collaborative projects designed to revitalize and develop their language and culture. Dr. Sullivan will also discuss the creation and support of intercultural and international collaborative relationships.

John Sullivan holds a PhD in Latin American Literature from the University of California San Diego and is a former Guggenheim Fellow.
